Every year, GCSE drama students in year 10 work on a piece of original drama to be presented to the whole school in assemblies. This years’ brief was based on ‘Contrasts’ and students explored the contrasting ways a hero is perceived in society.
The focused on 3 different conflicts, World War 1, the 9/11 terrorist acts in 2001 and the current Syria conflict where people are joining ISIS. Ultimately the drama reminded the audience that when someone is award the status of ‘hero’, it usually means someone has lost a loved one.

The students approached the subject matter, sensitively and respectfully, whilst ensuring some very tough questions were addressed. Both staff and students alike have reported that they have had extensive debates and discussions as a result of this play and expressed how impressed they were with the performance and | |
how the students were able to manage such a complex subject matter.
All the students involved should be very proud of themselves and take what they have learnt from this forward in preparation for their Unit 3 GCSE Mock exam, where they will have to devise a piece of Drama that would be worth 40% of their whole GCSE.
